The BFB houses liquid biopsy samples, such as blood and blood derivatives (serum, plasma, mononuclear cells, granulocytes), DNA, saliva, semen and urine from over 42,000 donors. The diagnoses include metabolic diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, respiratory and cardiac diseases, malignant neoplasms, psychiatric diseases, hepatic vascular diseases, maternal and foetal diseases and infectious diseases. It also has samples from healthy donors; the latter being of key importance for comparison with the control situation. Finally, the bank also offers human DNA samples from archaeological sites.
The BFB, located in the IDIBAPS Esther Koplowitz Centre (CEK building), coordinates multicentre national collections in different networks such as GETECCU, CIBERDEM and CIBERES, and participates as a laboratory providing technical services in various clinical trials.
