There have been no great advances in recent years, as it is generally considered that surgery is the most effective treatment. Progress has been made, however, in describing and promoting new surgical techniques and local anaesthesia methods for the toes so that the treatment is safer, with fewer recurrences and less pain. Surgery is of the outpatient type, with the patient being able to support the foot with basic autonomy from day one.

Research into these new techniques is aimed at a postoperative period with less pain and quicker recovery. Thus, improvements in anaesthetic procedures, analgesic guidelines and increasingly less aggressive surgical techniques with easy recovery are expected.

Some non-surgical treatment techniques have appeared, although it seems the results are not as expected.
