Ingrown toenail symptoms

Onychocryptosis occurs with intense pain, inflammation and infection around the affected nail. If not treated properly, pus (a purulent exudate), an offensive smell and granulation tissue as a result of the response of the tissues to the infection can all appear.

Although this pathology is generally benign, it can be complicated by giving rise to more extensive infections, such as cellulitis (infection of the deeper layers of the skin) or osteomyelitis (infection of the bone); therefore, it deserves special care, especially in diabetic patients.

Ingrown toenail signs:

  • Appearance of a soft tissue deformity around the nail.
  • Nail plate deformity.
