Causes and risk factors

Onychocryptosis usually occurs on the big toe and can be caused by several factors:

  • Improper nail cutting. They must be cut straight.  
  • Family predisposition or hereditary factors. The shape of the finger and nail plate are inherited, just as hair or eye colour are inherited.  
  • Biomechanical or structural alterations of the foot, such as flat feet or bunions.  
  • Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating of feet.
  • Footwear with a narrow toe and/or excessive heel height.  
  • Male sex
  • Certain trauma, such as trampling injury.
