Living with the condition

Reading time: 1 min

Onychocryptosis is a deformity, generally caused by the nail plate, causing pain and the need for prompt attention by the patient. Conservative treatment usually only lessens the symptoms; if the cause is not treated, the nail continues growing inwards over time.  Some of the recommendations to improve evolution of this condition, when it is not recurrent, are:

•    Wear shoes appropriate for the shape of the foot, since footwear rubbing against the toe aggravates the injury. You should wear a wide shoe with a heel of 1.5-2 cm.

•    Do not wear socks or stockings that compress the toes, as this can worsen the symptoms.

•    You should cut your nails properly; without leaving them too short and without trimming the sides.

•    Pain can be reduced by using anti-inflammatory medication and antibiotics.
