Research - Neonatology Service

The Neonatology Service of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, ??in collaboration with the Neonatology Service of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona, within the framework of the SAMID Network, has several competitive research projects with stable funding as a research group (ISCIII, AGAUR).

The Service has its own collaborative research plan to place itself on the map of national and international neonatal research. It also aims to identify, incorporate and promote key people with a clinical and research profile. At the same time, it leads research in deploying and completing the functional integration plan between the Neonatology Services of the Hospital Clínic and the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona (BCNatal project).

The Neonatology Service has a national and international research group in the field of prenatal exposure to substances of abuse, especially alcohol. It has an average scientific output of 15 publications per year. It incorporates an analytical laboratory service and an emerging technological innovation section.

The defined lines of research are (funding agencies for ongoing projects) the following:

  • Neonatal neurodevelopment (FIS-ISCIII)
  • Prematurity (FIS-ISCIII, AGAUR, Barcelona City Council, its own innovation project (3D, App, virtual reality), torpid clinical trial, SafeBooscIII)
  • Breastfeeding and microbiome (FIS-ISCIII)
  • Prenatal exposure to alcohol (animal models (rat and zebrafish), basic research, damage and epigenetic markers, monitoring of cohorts and therapeutic candidates) (FIS-ISCIII, Probitas, Telefónica, own innovation project (App), clinical trial with EGCG)
  • Perinatal environmental health (FIS-ISCIII)
