The Neonatology Service at the Hospital Clínic Barcelona got decked out for Carnival once again this year. The magic of Hogwarts invaded the neonatal ICU and the ward, turning the hospitalized babies into little wizards for a day. This initiative was launched in 2019 by the nursing team and the nursing auxiliary care technicians (TCAIs), and the babies' costumes were made in collaboration with family members of the hospital staff. That year, the carnival celebration in the Neonatology Service was very well received by the babies' families, and this festival has now become a tradition.
This year, the theme was Harry Potter and the fantasy world of Hogwarts. “Harry Potter came up as an idea in a conversation between colleagues, and we took the plunge! We thought about how we could go about it and dress our little ones up as Hogwarts students”, explained Gemma Ruano, a neonatal nurse. The hospitalized babies wore capes, scarves and shorts and the team of professionals dressed up with the same theme.
Erika Sánchez, healthcare coordinator in the Neonatology Service, added that, “at the end of January, they started working to create some magic in the Service” and to make a “heart-warming event for the families and continue to collect unforgettable moments”.
This initiative breaks with the hospital’s daily routine. The costumes were made by the paediatric nurses, led by Gemma Ruano and Ana Casado, with the collaboration of a group of volunteers.
