Organization - Internal Medicine Service

The Internal Medicine Service participates in the following Units:

The healthcare activity of the Internal Medicine Service of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona focuses mainly on treating people with:

  • Heart Failure

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Diabetes

  • High Blood Pressure

The Service participates in the Thromboembolic Disease Working Group (in conjunction with Medical Emergencies, Pulmonology and Medical Oncology).

The Service also works in coordination with different Services of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona to support patients who have medical complications during admission that are different than those that motivated their admission.

In addition, the Service has specific areas for the care of other rare or specific diseases that are described in the units and organizations.

The Service is structured as follows:

Intensive Surveillance Area or AVI. Intended for the patient in serious condition. It has eight beds for critically ill patients and four for semi-critical patients.

Geriatrics Section. Intended for the comprehensive care of the frail patient in the following areas:

  • A hospitalization room (Acute Geriatrics Unit or UGA) with 21 beds

  • A specific Geriatrics meeting room for outpatients (EAIAG)

  • A Day Hospital for preferential outpatient care for patients with chronic diseases with a high risk of decompensation (Chronic Complex Patient or PCC).

  • In addition, together with the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service, it has an Orthogeriatrics unit for the multidisciplinary care of elderly patients with fractures, especially of the femur.

Two conventional hospital wards, with 22 beds each.

Outpatient care, where external consultations are carried out.

Rapid Diagnosis (UDR) is a service for the outpatient diagnosis of patients with various medical problems (unintentional weight loss, anemia, lymphadenopathy, etc.). Patients are referred from Primary Care, from the hospital's Emergency Department or from other specialists. The activity of the UDR has been increasing at a rate of 10% per year for ten years. In 2018 it treated more than 600 new patients and made more than 1,800 visits in total.

Hospital consultation team. Referrals from the various hospital departments are assigned among the entire staff of the department.
