Organization

The Biomedical Diagnostic Center consists of four Services and Two Areas:

  • Pathological Anatomy

Performs an integrated diagnosis in general and specialized pathology, cytology, hematopathology and cytogenetics, with its own high-level technology

  • Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics

Its purpose is to provide the necessary resources for the development, conduct and interpretation of analytical tests in the field of clinical chemistry, as well as to promote research and training programs in laboratory medicine.

  • Immunology

It is in charge of healthcare tests for the prevention, diagnosis and follow-up of diseases of immunological origin, as well as of the treatment and monitoring of these diseases with personalized immunotherapy techniques.

  • Microbiology

Provides effective information for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of infectious diseases.

  • Área Operativa del Laboratorio Core

It centralizes in a common technical and organizational structure the most frequent and automated tests of the CBD.

  • Operational Area Service of the CORE Molecular Biology Laboratory

It centralizes and automates the main molecular biology techniques performed in the different services of the CBD.

The CBD's laboratories occupy approximately 8,000 square meters, distributed between the Villarroel Headquarters and the Maternity Headquarters of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. It houses the facilities of the four Services and two Operating Areas that make it up.

The Centre's healthcare activity is dedicated to the diagnosis, prognosis, monitoring and treatment of diseases and also includes advice on the interpretation of results and clinical guidance. The CBD is mainly aimed at the reference population of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, but it also serves numerous hospital laboratories and private centers in Catalonia and Spain.

At the same time, as a reference center and public health service in Catalonia, the CBD carries out early detection programs, including:

  • Neonatal screening for congenital diseases. Prenatal diagnostic programs such as Down syndrome and cytogenetics.
  • Histocompatibility studies of solid organ transplants and hematopoietic progenitors, such as HLA typing and viral serology for all organ transplants in Catalonia.
  • Minority disease detection programs

The CBD, in partnership with the Blood and Tissue Bank (BST), also carries out transfusions that provide blood products to patients at the Hospital. It also performs the Erythroapheresis and Therapeutic Bleeding procedures at the Hematology Day Hospital.

Laboratories can handle nearly 1 million analytical requests each year and can perform almost 7 million analyses, making them national and international benchmarks in laboratory medicine.
