Lines of research about Tuberculosis

Reading time: 1 min

The main lines of research on the disease are focused on improving tools to prevent, diagnose and cure the disease.

There are several vaccine candidates in the clinical development phase. Their objective is to improve the efficacy of the BCG vaccine against infection and disease. The BCG vaccine does not offer protection against the most frequent tuberculosis, which is pulmonary tuberculosis in adults.

Also, new antibiotics and short-term preventive schemes are being developed. In the field of treatment, there are several clinical trials aimed at reducing the duration of antibiotic treatment, with a shorter scheme of 4 months; however, this is not yet available in Spain or other European countries.

In a proportion of tuberculosis cases, bacteriological confirmation is not achieved, especially in the paediatric population. For this reason, new molecular tools and biomarkers are being investigated to contribute to better, earlier diagnosis of the disease.
