Portal Vein Thrombosis Symptoms

Reading time: 1 min

Symptoms vary depending on whether it is diagnosed in the acute or chronic phase and according to the speed and extent of thrombus formation.

In acute portal vein thrombosis, the main symptom is:

Standing person with abdominal pain

Abdominal pain, which may be accompanied by fever, systemic inflammatory response syndrome or, rarely, ascites (excessive accumulation of fluid in the abdomen).

If thrombosis affects the mesenteric veins (which carry blood from the intestines to the liver), they can stop receiving enough blood and oxygen (intestinal ischaemia) and damage intestinal tissue.

Meanwhile, chronic portal thrombosis is usually asymptomatic or it may cause complications, such as digestive bleeding or ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdomen), due to the development of portal vein hypertension.
