What is Portal Thrombosis or Portal Vein Thrombosis?

This occurs when a blood clot forms inside the hepatic portal vein, which carries blood from the digestive system organs (intestines, stomach, spleen and pancreas) to the liver.

How many people are affected by Portal Vein Thrombosis?

It affects 3.5 people per 100,000 per year, and is mainly caused by increased blood pressure in the portal vein (prehepatic portal hypertension).

High blood pressure, gastroscopy, biopsy, varicose veins.
