Evolution of Portal Vein Thrombosis

Reading time: 1 min

Improvements in imaging techniques have led to earlier diagnosis for acute portal vein thrombosis, which facilitates the initiation of anticoagulant treatment. Survival is high with appropriate treatment. However, cases with intestinal infarction or multi-organ failure are associated with greater morbidity and mortality.

Chronic portal vein thrombosis generally has a high survival rate of 95% at 10 years. Complications of portal hypertension, such as the appearance of oesophageal varices, variceal bleeding or ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdomen) require specific management and should be monitored.
