Diagnosis of Lacrimal System Diseases

Reading time: 1 min

Lacrimal system diseases can be diagnosed by an ophthalmologist, via examination and use of a slit lamp (a special ophthalmic microscope).

Probing/irrigation of the lacrimal duct with a small cannula and saline solution is often performed during the examination.

An endonasal examination is also often performed, as lacrimal problems can sometimes be related to the nasal cavities. Other additional examinations are not usually necessary.

Imaging tests (CT or MRI) or analytical tests may need to be performed in certain cases.
