Causes and risk factors of the Lacrimal System Diseases

Reading time: 1 min

The main cause of lacrimal system diseases include:

  • Age.
  • Eye infections such as conjunctivitis or blepharitis can lead to obstruction of the tear duct if they are severe or recurring.
  • Certain medications (especially some anticancer drugs) may also predispose patients to tear duct problems.
  • Finally, in cases of congenital lacrimal duct obstructions, the cause is an underdeveloped tear duct in newborns, which in most cases improves during the first year of life as the child grows.
