What are Lacrimal System Diseases?

Reading time: 1 min

Lacrimal (tear) duct problems are very common, to the extent that in old age they affect almost the entire population. They are classified into lacrimal obstructions and lacrimal infections. These processes are four times more frequent in women than in men and their main cause is age.

The lacrimal system is a small network of ducts that connect the eyes and the nose. Through these ducts, the tears that are constantly produced in the eye drain into the nose and from there into the throat, establishing constant circulation.

Lacrimal (tear duct) problems are very common, to the extent that in old age they affect almost the entire population. These diseases are more common in women than men. Because their main cause is ageing, their incidence and prevalence rates increase with age.

These diseases can be divided into two groups:

  • lacrimal obstructions.
  • and lacrimal infections. Infections often occur in previously obstructed tear ducts.

It is worth mentioning that there is group of paediatric patients with tear duct obstructions: those with congenital lacrimal duct obstructions.
