Incisional Hernia or Eventration at the Clínic

Reading time: 1 min

In a high complexity general hospital, the percentage of abdominal wall surgery is 12-15%, with incisional hernias accounting for 7% of these. Incisional hernias or eventrations account for 17% of all laparotomies performed at Hospital Clínic. About 100 eventration surgeries are performed annually. 70% are major outpatient surgery (MOS), the rest are very complex eventrations.

Hospital Clínic has pioneered the use of retromuscular repair to treat this condition, which has been shown to achieve the best long-term results. In this technique, the mesh is placed behind the muscles, to avoid the position above the muscle and to prevent complications at the subcutaneous and skin level, and the intraperitoneal position that leaves the mesh in contact with the intestines with a risk of adhesion.

The team dedicated to treating these hernias is working on clinical lines that can improve the results and morbidity of this technique.
