Prognosis of Incisional Hernia or Eventration

Reading time: 1 min

The reappearance or recurrence of eventration is between 4% and 15% when mesh is used.

Eventrorrhaphy, or non-mesh treatment, has a recurrence rate of around 60%.

Functional recovery in successful cases is adequate and patients are able to lead a normal life, including the ability to do physical exercise.

Non-surgical treatment causes progressive growth of the eventration, with the risk of leakage, strangulation, and the possibility that the contents of the intestine do not return to the peritoneal cavity.

In very rare cases, a conservative treatment with a girdle may be chosen for patients for whom surgery is very high risk.
