What is an Incisional Hernia or Eventration?

Reading time: 1 min

An incisional hernia or eventration is the result of an incision made in the abdominal wall during surgery healing poorly.

The result is a hole in the abdominal wall. The intraperitoneal contents can come through this hole, with the possible risk of incarceration and strangulation of the hernia.

It has a very high incidence worldwide (15-20% of all laparotomies performed) although improvements in wall closure techniques (using prophylactic mesh in patients at risk of developing this disease, and laparoscopic surgery with small incisions) are contributing to a reduction in this percentage.

The donations that can be done through this webpage are exclusively for the benefit of Hospital Clínic of Barcelona through Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica and not for BBVA Foundation, entity that collaborates with the project of PortalClínic.
