Living with Facial Paralysis

Reading time: 1 min

The most common recommendations for patients who have facial paralysis are:

Medication or eye drop treatment

Eye care. The most important thing in acute facial paralysis is eye care. The objective is to prevent corneal injuries. Generally, artificial tears during the day and ointment just before going to sleep are indicated. In more severe cases, night-time shields or a moisture chamber (transparent dressing that retains moisture) may also be necessary. Avoiding exposure to air conditioning, pollution or smoke, for example, are also recommended, as well as washing your hair with neutral soap.

Nose drops

Moisturise the nasal passages. Nostrils should be moistened with seawater or physiological solution to eliminate nasal dryness.

Boiling pot

Follow an easy-chewing diet. Due to the difficulty in closing the lips when eating food. Chewing gum, blowing up balloons and clenching your jaw are also not recommended.

Following any problem of this type, you should see a facial paralysis specialist so the most appropriate treatment can be prescribed in each case.
