Causes of Facial Paralysis

Below are some reasons why facial paralysis may appear: 

Herpes

Herpes simplex family virus (cold sores and genital herpes). It appears suddenly and spontaneously. 

Varicella zoster virus

Varicella zoster virus

Ear with herpes

Herpes zoster oticus or Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome. It occurs when an outbreak of shingles, that is, herpes, affects the facial nerve near one of the ears. 

Scissors and scalpel

After removal of a non-cancerous ear tumour (acoustic neuroma) or parotid tumour.

Head trauma.

Hepatitis A virus

Infections acquired by the patient during the course of treatment.
