Treatment of cholangiocarcinoma

Reading time: 1 min

Surgical resection is the only treatment that can potentially cure this disease. However, this option is possible only if the disease is located exclusively in the liver and if its size and location make it possible to remove it completely.  For small tumours that appear in patients in whom surgery is not possible, an alternative is tumour ablation, which is burning the tumour by inserting an ultrasound-guided needle.

Also, in very selected cases, radiotherapy can be performed by injecting beads charged with a radioactive isotope through the hepatic artery.  For patients diagnosed with the disease at an already advanced stage, especially if there is metastasis to other organs, the ideal treatment is chemotherapy.

The donations that can be done through this webpage are exclusively for the benefit of Hospital Clínic of Barcelona through Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica and not for BBVA Foundation, entity that collaborates with the project of PortalClínic.
