Diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma

The combination of clinical and imaging findings allows the diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma to be suspected.  

Radiological diagnosis is based mainly on three techniques:  

However, the final diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma requires obtaining tissue for microscopic analysis of the bile duct for the microscopic analysis.

Once the diagnosis of this disease has been confirmed, radiological studies are carried out to determine the exact extent of the lesion; that is, if it is located only in the liver or affects other parts of the body.

This information is essential for planning possible therapeutic options and to assess the prognosis. The management of this disease requires a multidisciplinary group of doctors with extensive experience in liver tumours; so it is recommended that patients diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma are treated in referral centres.
