Any disease associated with chronic inflammation of the bile duct increases the risk of developing this neoplasm.  

Some of the common risk factor to develop intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma are:  

On the other hand, primary sclerosing cholangitis, which is inflammation with progressive fibrosis and narrowing of the bile ducts inside and outside the liver, is associated with extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

However, it should be noted that no risk factor is identified in a large number of diagnosed cases.
