Symptoms of cholangiocarcinoma

Reading time: 1 min

The most characteristic and common symptom of extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is yellow pigmentation of the skin and eyes, known as jaundice. This symptom is produced by the accumulation of bilirubin in the blood due to the obstruction of the bile duct that prevents the elimination of bilirubin through the digestive tract.

For intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, the most common symptoms are:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Malaise
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea
  • Weight loss

In a 25% of cases, cholangiocarcinoma is diagnosed without symptoms. In these patients it is diagnosed in many cases by chance finding cholangiocarcinoma in an imaging test, such as an abdominal ultrasound, performed to study an alteration in analytical parameters. In these cases, the disease is usually located in the liver, at an initial stage and can be treated with the aim of completely eliminating the disease.
