What is Bronchiectasis?

Bronchiectasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when the bronchi, which are responsible for transporting air to the lungs, dilate and weaken; losing the ability to remove mucus, dust and other tiny particles breathed in that accumulate in the lungs.

How many people are affected by Bronchiectasis?

Bronchiectasis can affect both sexes at any age; although it is more common in women and its incidence increases with age. The estimated prevalence is 40-50 cases per 100,000.

The number of diagnosed cases has increased in recent years, probably due to advances in the use of respiratory tests such as computed tomography (CT) and lung scans.
