Treatment of AMD at the Clínic

Reading time: 1 min

The Hospital Clínic, Barcelona is a benchmark in the use of the most innovative treatments for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

The wet form of AMD (neovascular) is a retina ageing process to which is added an abnormal growth of the blood vessels located behind the macula, which distorts images. This has been treated for a few years by means of periodic intraocular injections that slow down the progression of the disease.

This type of treatment has drastically changed prognosis, as it makes it possible to stabilise vision loss and even improve it in some cases.

At the Ophthalmology Clínic Institute (Institut Clínic de Oftalmologia, ICOF), between the Maternity and Sagrat Cor sites, a total of 5,400 intravitreal injections are performed each year for the treatment of retinal diseases, most of which are for AMD.
