Research lines of Age-related Macular Degeneration

Reading time: 1 min

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the main areas of research within the field of ophthalmology, both in terms of developing new treatments and examination techniques.

There are international studies that analyze the most advanced treatments in which, if the eye specialist (ophthalmologist), after a thorough examination, considers that a particular case meets the required criteria, the patient could be included it (premarketing phase) and benefit from the state-of-the-art therapies.

In recent years, studies have been carried out on intravitreal treatments in real life conditions. Their results have provided very valuable information on:

  • the features of the lesions treated
  • the number of injections given
  • the visual results obtained

These data are important to improve patient care.

An example of this type of study is the national registry, Fight Retinal Blindness (FRB) Spain, coordinated from the Hospital Clinic with the participation of numerous professionals from the Ophthalmology Clínic Institute (Institut Clínic de Oftalmologia, ICOF).
