Treatment of Age-related Macular Degeneration

Age is the main determining factor in all forms of the disease and, therefore, more often than not AMD advances over time, causing a gradual deterioration of your vision.

There is currently no treatment for advanced dry AMD other than taking vitamin supplements to ensure the retina receives adequate nutrition and to reduce the risk of developing advanced wet AMD.

However, in recent years advanced wet AMD has been treated with medicines administered by regular intraocular injections that slow the disease’s progression. This treatment has dramatically changed the prognosis, since the loss of vision can be stabilised and in some cases even improves. Early diagnosis is essential because the treatment is most effective at the onset of damage, when the lesion has been developing for the least amount of time.

Smoking worsens all forms of AMD. It is the main modifiable risk factor in relation to the condition’s progress.

There are various different specialised optical aids available on the market (filters, magnifiers, electronic systems, etc.) which can improve the quality of your vision and help with daily activities. Enquire with a reputable optician.
