The Nephrology and Kidney Transplant Service aims to conduct applied research to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of kidney disease. The research is carried out, above all, through the August Pi Sunyer Institute for Biomedical Research (IDIBAPS). The service also participates in thematic research networks of the Carlos III Institute of Health, such as the REDinREN (Renal Research Network).

The Nephrology and Renal Transplant Service participates in different IDIBAPS research groups in the area of ​​Respiratory, Cardiovascular and Renal Biopathology and Bioengineering, and, specifically, in the following group:

  • Transplant immunology
  • Cell therapy and renal regeneration
  • Oncogenesis in transplantation
  • Advanced transplant therapies
  • Pancreatic transplant
  • Glomerular disease and endothelial dysfunction
  • Hemodialysis: modalities, uremic toxins
  • Chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease
  • Chronic disease and bone and mineral metabolism
  • Vascular access for hemodialysis
  • Acute renal failure


These lines of research have been awarded competitive public projects (Instituto de Salud Carlos III and Ministerio de Sanidad, among others) and have allowed an advancement in the knowledge of the diseases of the kidney. Several members of the Service have participated and are participating in the generation of national and international clinical guidelines due to their recognized prestige.

The Renal Nephrology and Transplant Service is actively involved in clinical trials that allow patients to benefit from new therapies prior to final marketing. All areas of the Service are actively involved in trials: chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, glomerular, systemic and vascular disease, kidney transplantation and hemodialysis.
