The teaching activity of the Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Service is developed in different areas. Its main feature is a high degree of multidisciplinarity, as it is aimed at different academic groups and areas of knowledge. The current teaching activity integrates undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies.

Degrees and master's

The Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Service participates, through the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Genetics unit, in the teaching of the degrees in Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmacy and Nursing —in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona—  and in the teaching of Higher Degree Vocational Training in the Clinical and Biomedical Laboratory. There are internship agreements with different training centers.

The Service has two University Professors, a Full Professor, two Associate Professors and six Associate Professors who belong to the Departments of Biomedicine and Medicine of the University of Barcelona. The doctors of the Service also participate as teaching staff in different Master's, such as Biomedicine and Translational Medicine, at the University of Barcelona.

MIR training

The Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Service offers a complete training in the specialty of:

The two places offered to residents each year may come from the degrees of Medicine, Pharmacology, Chemistry and Biology (MIR, FIR, QIR and BIR). For three and a half years, residents are trained and participate in the activities of the different sections of the Service, and the last six months are reserved for a stay in the area of preference of the resident.

It is also common to receive residents from both national and international centers who request training stays to expand their knowledge.

Upon completion of the training, the resident of Clinical Biochemistry will know the physiology, pathophysiology, molecular pathology and biochemical changes that occur in the disease. What's more, the resident will be able to do the following:

  • Interpret, in each context, the biochemical magnitudes in medicine.
  • Have knowledge of biochemical analytical methods and techniques and their fundamentals.
  • Acquire the necessary skills for the management of a Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory.
  • Know the basic principles of scientific research and be actively involved in experimental design, methodology, obtaining results, analysis and discussion.

The aim is to achieve sufficient training for the teaching and transmission of knowledge to other graduates in training and to clinical doctors.

Continuing education

Another area in which the staff of the Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Service participates is continuing education. There are courses organized by the Service itself as well as activities organized by Scientific Societies in which the specialty is a part.

Each month there are sessions of the different Sections and general sessions of the Service, accredited by the Catalan Council of Continuing Education.
