Treatment of Vitiligo

Pharmacological treatment and phototherapy
Topical anti-inflammatory drugs, such as corticosteroids (applied directly to the skin).
Topical calcineurin inhibitors for small depigmented areas on the face and neck.
UVB and narrow band (NB) phototherapy to slow or delay the progression of active vitiligo. This should be performed 2-3 times a week, with visible effects 3-6 months after starting treatment. Phototherapy is applied in very controlled, gradually increasing doses; taking great care not to damage the skin. The aim is to find a balance between stimulating pigmentation and protecting against sunburn.
Excimer lasers. It is applied locally on patches to stimulate pigmentation.
Depigmentation of unaffected areas when vitiligo is extensive.
Skin micrografts
When drug or phototherapy treatment is ineffective and vitiligo is stabilised, there is the option of surgical treatment with skin micrografts.
The procedure consists of grafting very small areas of healthy, pigmented skin onto areas without pigmentation.
New therapies
In 2023, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) approved ruxolitinib as the first cream medication authorised in the European Union to treat non-segmental vitiligo (NSV), which affects different areas of the body and can appear at any age. This treatment is indicated for adults and adolescents from 12 years of age.
