Treatment of Uterine Myoma

Reading time: 1 min

Treatment is based on the following considerations: associated symptoms, patient age, reproductive desire and a simple desire for uterine preservation.

There are two main lines:

  • Medical. Non-hormonal (antifibrinolytic agents, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, NSAIDs, and hormonal preparations based on: combined oral contraceptives, progestagens, Levonorgestrel IUD, selective progesterone receptor modulators and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH) analogues.
  • Surgical. Myomectomy (abdominal-hysteroscopic), hysterectomy.

There are also minimally invasive non-surgical procedures, such as Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE), magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) and radiofrequency ablation, among others, which can be equally effective in selected cases.
