Frequently asked questions about Tinnitus

Reading time: 1 min
Can tinnitus be cured?

Currently, no treatment has proven effective in entirely eliminating tinnitus.

Is there a way to reduce it?

There are techniques to help improve tolerance, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy and using masking sounds at night.

Can it become serious?

With few exceptions, tinnitus is a totally benign condition that most people get used to.

What tests will be done to me?

In general, an initial examination using otoscopy and acoumetry followed by audiometry. If significant asymmetry is found, imaging tests may be done.

If I wear hearing aids, will my tinnitus get worse?

No. Tinnitus is a misinterpretation by the brain of information it does not receive from the ear; therefore, it will not increase when using hearing aids, but will probably decrease (due to the masking effect).
