Symptoms of thyroid nodules

Reading time: 1 min

Most thyroid nodules are asymptomatic and are usually diagnosed because the patient notices a lump when looking in the mirror or when they touch it (palpation), their doctor notices it during a routine examination, or it is seen on an x-ray test performed for another reason.

Symptomatic nodules are due to enlargement or the autonomous production of thyroid hormones, resulting in the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

The enlargement may cause some patients to notice:

Woman with neck pain, jaw and ear

Pain in the neck, jaw or ear.

Person lying in bed with difficulty breathing

A feeling of pressure in the neck or difficulty breathing when lying down.

Dysphagia, difficulty to swallow

Difficulty swallowing.

Woman with a feeling of occupancy or difficulty breathing

The sensation of a foreign body in the neck or breathing difficulties.

Disgruntled person sticking out tongue due to taste disturbance

Hoarseness or dysphonia when the nodule irritates the laryngeal nerve.
