Causes of thyroid nodules

Reading time: 1 min

The exact mechanism by which nodules appear and grow is unknown. Altogether, there are many possible causes of thyroid nodules, most of which are the same as the causes of nodular goitre.

Nodules and goitres are more common in areas where there is a lack of iodine in the diet. Some nodules have a hereditary, genetic component that causes them to grow.

The presence of a nodule does not exclude the possibility of another thyroid disease in the same patient, such as chronic thyroiditis or hyperthyroidism (toxic multinodular goitre or toxic adenoma).
