Prognosis of Pneumothorax

Reading time: 1 min

Having previous pneumothorax episodes (homo- or contralateral), base pulmonary pathology and/or certain toxic habits (e.g., smoking) influence the development of symptoms and the probability of them reappearing, and so also have therapeutic implications.

There are some special cases (repeated pneumothorax in young women of gestational age), in which infertility, previous uterine surgery or, more rarely, haemoptysis and/or haemothorax in relation to menstruation can guide towards a catamenial origin.

Pneumothorax can impact on patients' lives due to the fear of a possible relapse. Thus, it is advisable to lead a normal life without exposing yourself to the highest risk factor, which is smoking.
