Carcinomatosis causes and risk factors

Reading time: 1 min

Many aspects of the causes of peritoneal carcinomatosis are currently under investigation. Although the causes of peritoneal dissemination are not known, some factors related to its appearance have been described. Some of the factors linked to an increased risk of peritoneal carcinomatosis are:

  • In colorectal cancer, poorly differentiated tumour cells (that don't look like normal cells)
  • Perforation of the primary tumour
  • Intestinal obstruction due to a tumour
  • The presence of metastasis in the ovaries
  • There is also a relationship between surgical interventions and the appearance of tumours, which are observed especially in scars from previous surgeries.
