Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Research at the Clínic

Reading time: 2 min

Research is carried out via the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), and specifically at the Childhood and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology group.

It receives funding from competitive public and private research grants, with the support of IDIBAPS and the CIBER for Mental Health (CIBERSAM).

To understand and treat the disorder better, current research focuses on several OCD-related aspects.

The main lines of research are:

  • A study of the effectiveness of intensive psychological treatments.
  • A study of the biological variables predicting psychological treatment outcomes.
  • A study of changes in brain biology related to psychological treatment.
  • Validation of OCD-related scales.

Current research projects

  • FIS Project (2017-2019)
    • Influence of genetics and epigenetics on the effectiveness of the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder with cognitive-behavioural therapy or pharmacological treatment. The aim of this study is to identify genes and changes in gene expression related to the mechanisms of action of the pharmacological and psychological treatments used for this disorder, in addition to developing pharmacogenetic predictors of a response to these treatments.
  • PERIS Project (2018-2020)
    • Characterisation, through neuroimaging, of predictors and mechanisms of response to cognitive-behavioural therapy in obsessive-compulsive disorder. The objective of the project is to use neuroimaging tests to determine brain changes associated with intensive psychological treatment in children, adolescents and adults with OCD.
  • FAK Project (2018-2020)
    • Why can't a child stop washing? Learning Habits in childhood OCD. The aim of the project is to use neuroimaging tests to determine whether children and adolescents with OCD have a greater tendency to form 'habits'.

Number of ongoing trials or research projects

  • FIS project, in collaboration with Bellvitge Hospital.
  • FIS project, OCD, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology.
  • An Alicia Koplowitz Foundation project, in collaboration with the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology.
