Symptoms and Signs of Mitochondrial Myopathies or Encephalomyopathies

Reading time: 1 min

The most common symptoms of these diseases are:

A person carrying a lot of weight

Muscle weakness or the inability to exert oneself.

Drooping eyelid

Permanent drooping of the eyelids, sometimes accompanied by gaze palsy.

Retinal detachment

Retinal alterations.

Heart with a padlock representing a heart blockage

Heart blocks that require pacemakers

Person with a cane and trembling

Tremors.

Person with sweat, nausea and vomiting next to a toilet

Vomiting.

Although these symptoms are very common, in the vast majority of cases they are not due to mitochondrial encephalomyopathies. The reason a medical professional may suspect one of these diseases is the appearance of several of these symptoms simultaneously or additively and at ages when symptoms are rare, for example, the appearance of severe deafness, which is relatively common in older people, but not in a teenager.

The other symptoms are identical to those seen in numerous illnesses that are much more frequent than mitochondrial diseases.
