Frequently Asked Questions about Mitochondrial Myopathies or Encephalomyopathies

Reading time: 1 min
Are mitochondrial diseases hereditary?

They are genetically based and are inherited from the mother, a different pattern from the more common, Mendelian inheritance. There are people who can have the same genetic mutation and yet not suffer from the disease.

Browsing the Internet, I have seen that many remedies are offered for these diseases. Are these real?

Practically none of this is true. You have to be very wary of these “miracle cures”, which suggest the use of pharmaceuticals or parapharmaceuticals.
