Overall, the prognosis of these diseases is not good, as the available treatments only improve the symptoms, and do not cure the disease.

Despite this, some of these diseases, such as MELAS or MERFF, have a worse prognosis. In the case of Kearns-Sayre the progression is unpredictable, ranging from fatal cases at an early age to patients who survive up to the age of 80 with the only symptom being drooping eyelids.

Acute complications

The most serious are those that occur in MELAS, which take the form of episodes similar to stroke. Also, in some of these syndromes hyperlactacidaemia (increased lactate in the blood) may occur, and this is very difficult to treat.

Chronic complications

These diseases usually develop slowly (over years), although in some cases, such as MELAS, they occur in a much shorter timeframe and are much more serious.
