Main lines of research on Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease

Reading time: 1 min

The main lines of research globally are focused on understanding the pathophysiology of GORD and improving both diagnosis and treatment.

Greater knowledge of the functioning of the gastro-oesophageal barrier, as well as the volume and composition of reflux, will help to differentiate better among the presentations of the disease for a more personalised approach.

In the case of Barrett's oesophagus, it is especially important to identify the risk factors that a patient has for developing cancer and to be able to carry out more intensive monitoring in these cases.

Despite the high effectiveness and availability of proton pump inhibitor drugs (PPIs), there are still patients who do not respond very well to this treatment. Potassium competitive blockers (P-CABs) is a new therapeutic group currently being studied; these inhibit acid production more quickly and powerfully.
