Prognosis of Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy

Reading time: 1 min

Fuchs’ dystrophy gets worse over time. Without a corneal transplant, a person with severe Fuchs’ dystrophy can lose a lot of vision, suffer severe pain and even go blind.

Mild cases of Fuchs’ dystrophy often get worse after cataract surgery. After endothelial transplant surgery (DSAE K/DMEK) the risk of rejection is minimal and the prognosis is very good.

Prevention

There is no known form of prevention. Indicating early cataract surgery or taking special precautions during surgery can delay the need for a corneal transplant.
