Bunion research at the Clínic

Reading time: 1 min

The Foot and Ankle working group at the Clínic Barcelona actively participates in research to understand forefoot pathology and evaluate the effectiveness of its current treatments.

Some of the papers published in international journals over the past 2 years include topics such as:

  • Assessing results for Akin osteotomy (a big toe correction technique) fixed without using metallic materials. The results suggest it is possible to adequately correct the big toe without using metallic materials, as well as estimate the level of effectiveness of the correction according to the area of the toe where the cuts are made.
  • Evaluating the long-term effectiveness of distal corrections (close to the toes) to treat severe bunions. Classically, severe bunions are treated with surgery that involves fusing the joint between the foot and toe, but this study suggests that, under certain conditions, it is possible to treat severe hallux valgus without doing this.

  • Determining the objective recovery of normal functionality of the big toe joint after hallux valgus surgery and how such functionality is preserved during the postoperative evolution. Because of this, the correction techniques used in surgery and their potential success can be evaluated.
