What is Abdominal Separation or Diastasis Recti?

Reading time: 1 min

Abdominal separation or diastasis recti is a disorder of the abdominal wall that occurs when the rectus abdominis muscles separate at the level of the linea alba, the midline of the body, which leaves the central area of the abdominal wall weaker. It is estimated that up to two-thirds of postpartum women and one-third of overweight or obese patients suffer from this condition.

The rectus abdominis is a muscle divided into two symmetrical parts located on the anterior abdominal surface and runs from the ribs to the top of the pubis.

How many people does it affect?

It is very difficult to know the real incidence because it becomes clinically evident when the separation is greater than 3 cm. However, in risk groups, it is estimated that up to two-thirds of postpartum women and one-third of overweight or obese patients suffer from this condition.
