Traveller’s Diarrhoea symptoms
The symptoms of traveller’s diarrhoea are:
An increase in the rhythm of bowel movements, with shapeless stools, during or immediately after a trip.
Abdominal pain (colic type), tenesmus, nausea, vomiting, fever or faecal urgency.
Occasionally, the faeces may contain blood or mucus.
In more than half of all cases, diarrhoea appears during the first week of travel, and tends to last for 3 or 4 days.
When should I go to hospital?
You should see a doctor in cases of:
-
High fever, persistent nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
-
Diarrhoea lasting more than five days following dietary treatment.
-
Blood and mucus in the faeces.
-
Signs of dehydration (dry skin and mouth, intense thirst, small quantities of urine that is very dark in colour, absence of tears in crying children).
-
If diarrhoea persists after returning from the trip, it is essential to consult a specialised service.
