Living with Diarrhoea during travel
If you have diarrhoea while travelling, it is essential to take measures to prevent dehydration:
Take oral rehydration salts.
Follow an astringent diet.
If the diarrhoea is accompanied by fever or blood in the faeces, you are advised to go to a hospital centre and, in these cases, taking anti-diarrhoea drugs is not advised.
An astringent diet is based on consuming the following foods:
-
Natural yoghurt/kefir.
-
Meat: chicken, turkey, veal, cooked ham.
-
White fish: hake, sole, cod.
-
Vegetables: carrot, zucchini.
-
Carbohydrates: rice, white bread (never wholemeal), boiled potatoes.
-
Astringent fruits: ripe bananas; apple or pear (better without the skin, and very tasty if poached or baked).
And to be avoided:
-
Milk, flan and custard.
-
Yoghurt with fruit, cereal or nuts.
-
Cream and fatty cheeses.
-
Sausages, pâté.
-
Fatty or fibrous meats.
-
Shellfish, smoked and cured foods.
-
Wholewheat grains and their derivatives.
-
Pulses (at first).
-
Fibrous and flatulent vegetables: collards, artichokes, asparagus, peppers.
-
Fizzy drinks, alcoholic drinks, tea, coffee and fruit juice.
-
Butter, margarine and mayonnaise.
-
Nuts.
-
Chocolate and cacao.
-
Industrial pastries and baked goods.
-
Wholegrain biscuits.
-
Ready-made meals and commercial sauces.
