Warning Signs for Bullying
There are many warning signs that may indicate that someone is affected by bullying. Recognising the warning signs is important for taking action, as not all children who are bullied or are bullying others ask for help.
Children who are being bullied may present:
Unexplainable injuries.
Lost school materials or games.
Frequent headaches or stomach aches, complaints about feeling sick.
Changes in eating habits, like suddenly skipping meals or binge eating.
Increase in aggressive behaviour.
Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares.
Leakage of urine.
Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school.
Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations.
Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem.
Self-destructive behaviour such as self-harm or talking about suicide.
Signs a child is bullying others
Children who are bullying others may present:
Aggressive behaviour.
Frequent expressions from the classroom.
Extra money or new belongings which they cannot explain.
Concern about their reputation and popularity.
Warning signs of cyberbullying
These signs may indicate that someone is being bullied online or on their mobile phone:
Noticeable increases or decreases in use of their mobile, tablet or PC.
Exaggerated reactions when using their device.
The child hides their screen when others are near, and avoids discussion about what they are doing.
Closing or creating new social network accounts.
