Warning Signs for Bullying

There are many warning signs that may indicate that someone is affected by bullying. Recognising the warning signs is important for taking action, as not all children who are bullied or are bullying others ask for help.

Children who are being bullied may present:

Person with facial wounds

Unexplainable injuries.

Pencils and a ruler crossed out

Lost school materials or games.

A person with a lightning bolt drawn on the head and legs

Frequent headaches or stomach aches, complaints about feeling sick.

Person thinking about food binge eating

Changes in eating habits, like suddenly skipping meals or binge eating.

A group of people in which one is screaming

Increase in aggressive behaviour.

Recurring dreams

Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares.

Person with urinary incontinence

Leakage of urine. 

Crossed out school

Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school.

Woman separated from the group

Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations.

Reduced self-esteem

Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem.

A person with wounds in the face and a razor blade

Self-destructive behaviour such as self-harm or talking about suicide.

Signs a child is bullying others

Children who are bullying others may present:

A person who insults or verbally assaults another person

Aggressive behaviour.

Sad person leaving a building

Frequent expressions from the classroom.

A person with a mobile phone and coins

Extra money or new belongings which they cannot explain.

Smiling woman for being very successful in social networks

Concern about their reputation and popularity.

Warning signs of cyberbullying

These signs may indicate that someone is being bullied online or on their mobile phone:

Mobile with an up arrow indicating increased use

Noticeable increases or decreases in use of their mobile, tablet or PC.

A person shouting with a mobile in his hand

Exaggerated reactions when using their device.

A person with a mobile in his hand

The child hides their screen when others are near, and avoids discussion about what they are doing.

Mobile with different social networks

Closing or creating new social network accounts.
