Organization - Thoracic Surgery Service

The evaluation of diseases of the ribcage systematically includes the visit with the surgeon, who takes a complete medical history, does a physical examination and carries out the necessary complementary tests.

The surgical activity is carried out in five weekly surgery sessions in the central surgical block and a fortnightly session in ambulatory surgery. The service is made up of seven thoracic surgeons. The nursing staff, the patient manager and the ward and service administration staff are key to the operation.

Among the most frequent interventions of the service are lung cancer surgery; lung metastases surgery; pleural and mediastinal tumors, benign and malignant; volume reduction surgery in severe pulmonary emphysema, and treatment of excessive sweating of the hands, armpits and severe facial flushing.

The approach to diseases of the chest is developed in the following areas:

  • Surgical evaluation of benign and malignant lung tumors.
  • Diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the mediastinum, diaphragm and autonomic nervous system.
  • Surgical evaluation of pneumothorax and interstitial lung disease.
  • Diagnosis and surgical treatment of pleural diseases, both inflammatory and infectious as well as benign and malignant tumors.
